SOF Series II Run-Flat 8 & 12 Ply Rated Tires Approved by Elements of the U.S. Army TARDEC and TACOM for LTATV & ATV Use
Portland, OR July 23, 2013 - Today’s ‘specialized’ warfighter operates in multiple austere environments throughout the world. Traditionally, teams conduct missions relying on Light Tactical All-Terrain Vehicles (LTATV) and ATV mobility platforms. The ability for these vehicles to conduct unfettered travel in as much varying terrain as possible provides ‘Spec Ops’ greater tactical options. This requirement created a need for a tire to provide an aggressive footprint designed to traverse ever-changing terrain and most importantly, incorporate a Run-Flat capability to allow the vehicle to continue operations when punctured. Being stranded is never an acceptable option. To improve the tire system run-flat capability of the United States Special Forces family of light tactical vehicles, technology needed to be developed that provided an effective multi-directional tread pattern, could operate at zero air pressure with the carcass damaged/punctured, provide the same dynamic deflection as the normal pneumatic tire and provide similar or better tread life.
Could these capabilities be developed in a single tire and also reduce the logistical burden associated with other run-flat solutions? The answer was yes. RP Advanced Mobile Systems of McMinnville, Oregon understood the challenges of the mobilized Special Forces warfighter. With deliberate determination, RP focused and directed engineering efforts to develop the RP SOF Series Runflat Tire for LTATV and ATV. By improving the capabilities of the corded elements using advanced material layup towards optimal characteristics, developing & analyzing various structure models based on the tire’s elastic elements construction and improving the vulcanization process for a better performance, RP Advanced was able to create an innovative runflat tire solution possessing an aggressive tread and increased operational load rating making it incredibly versatile.
Various iterations of RP SOF Series runflat tires went through exhaustive engineering evaluations by military and government elements. The final result was the SOF Series II Run-Flat 8 ply rated and 12 ply rated tires being officially approved by elements of the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research and Development (TARDEC) and Tank Automotive Armament Command (TACOM) for LTATV and ATV. The bi-directional Type II incorporates a recessed bead for wheel protection, has a unique ply layup for sidewall strength-even when ballistically penetrated and has an extensive tread life as attested by multiple fielded trials. These tires have been globally deployed with incredible success by U.S. and ally forces.
